Mentoring essentials

Starting Out

International research stresses the importance for youth mentoring programmes to meet specific conditions and criteria if they are going to be sustainable and effectively encourage young people to reach their potential.

Effective programme practices around the screening, training and matching of mentors with young people, ongoing training, and supervision of mentoring relationships, to name only some key areas, are fundamental to youth mentoring programmes.

The programme should be designed to meet the specific needs of the young people being mentored. e.g., school-based; programmes for young underachievers.
